A.V. Oleinichenko ON THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME RURIK/RURIK/RORIC

The article rebuts the assertion established in national historiography that the name Rurik is of the Norman origin. Based on the analysis of various written sources, including the Euro-pean epic in the Early Middle Ages, it is concluded that the name of Rorik/Rurik was first rec-orded from the Gallo-Roman nobility at the turn of the III–IV centuries. The first bearer of the Gallo-Roman name Roric among the Scandinavians was a Danish king in the mid-ninth centu-ry Rurik of Jutland. The name has remained quite rare and not typical for Scandinavians.

Keywords: Rurik, Rurik, Rorik, the Normans, the Slavs, the Goths, “the song of the Nibe-lungs”, “the Slavic chronicles.”
