The article is devoted to famous events of Russian history of the second half of 15th centu-ry. The author of the article characterizes the activities of Grand Duke Ivan III, which were aimed at joining rich and geopolitically important Novgorod land to Grand Principality of Moscow. It is noted that Ivan III, unlike other Grand Dukes, his predecessors, was the first who dared to use military ways to solve this problem. The article focuses the readers’ atten-tion on Novgorod campaign of Grand Duke Ivan III in 1471. On the basis of the analysis of Russian chronicles the author reflects on the causes of this event, geopolitical situation of that period, effort taken by Novgorod residents to resist Moscow.
