D.A Lyapin, K.Yu. Gaiterova THE SPECIFICITY OF DISTRIBUTION OF BORDER LAND IN THE SOUTH OF RUSSIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XVII CENTURY. (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE LETTERS AND EARTH REGIONS)

The article considers the peculiarities of settlement in the South Russia region in the 17th century. The authors focus their attention on the distribution of frontier lands between parishes. Theoretical conclusions are made using the examples of Yelets and Zemlyansk parishes. The authors show that distribution of unoccupied lands at parish borders was linked to the development of small landowners’ (odnodvorcy) land tenure. Small landowners were the initiators of distribution of frontier lands. At the same time they continued maintaining their traditional forms of land use. The article also mentions the cooperativeness of small landlords, which led to the resettlement of landowners of one parish to a neighbouring one.

Key words: South of Russia, homesteaders, landlords, Yelets parish, Zemlyansk parish, frontier land.
