L.A. Sidorova TO THE QUESTION OF “SYMBOLIC STATUS” OF THE SCIENTIST IN THE COMMUNITY OF SOVIET HISTORIANS OF THE 1920–1930

The article discusses the heuristic potential of the concept of “symbolic status” of the scientist to study the community of Soviet historians in the 1920s – 1930s. The author analyzes the opinion expressed in the literature that after the year of 1917 the indicators of economic and social status of N.I. Kareev, his scientific activity, as well as the social circle of the historian did not change significantly. The article casts doubts on the thesis according to which the status of the scientist of “the old school” in post-revolutionary society was determined not by his ability to compromise or by social and political factors but by his pre-revolutionary status. It was concluded that maintaining the relative physical and material well-being of the historian cannot be viewed apart from the spiritual side of life of Russian historians of “the old school”, without taking into account the relationship of the two main generations of historians who worked in Soviet historical science in 1920s – 1930s – “old” and “red” professors.

Keywords: Soviet historical science, “symbolic status” of scientist, politics, ideology, generations of historians, Marxist historians, historians of ” the old school”, N.I. Kareev.
