The study of the role of personality in history will never lose its significance. For the indologist, this problem has a specific colour –what is the role of a public figures in Eastern societies and states? In the article gives characteristics of the historical figure of the Indian politician Vallabhbhai Patel, whose life and work are insufficiently studied by Russian historians. The article is devoted to the last year of his life and activity, during the period of the Tibetan question, in the context of the Indian-Chinese relations of 1949-1950.
