A.N. Dolgikh EMPRESS CATHERINE II OF RUSSIA, «ENLIGHTENED ABSOLUTISM» AND THE PEASANT QUESTION IN RUSSIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY

The article, using the  example of the intertangled fates of outstanding peers  Alexander II,
M.N. Katkov and I.S. Turgenev, examines the complex picture of spiritual struggle of Russia for its future. On the one hand, it is a forming ideology of strong rejection of the existing state of things, which led to the fatal February in 1917, on the other, the ideology of state protection, encouraging people  «to renew the spirit of our history, stop being foreigners and become truly the children of our country, a living part of our nation», which Turgenev and Katkov, respectively, were.
