Nowadays it is necessary to expand relations with foreign educational institutions. Today the interest to study such an experience from the past is growing. Ivan Tyapkin experience of studying abroad is just the case. The exact place where he studied is not known yet. The results of Tyapkin’s learning, which were reviewed by the Polish king Jan Sobieski, received opposite asses-sments from historians. The author of this article cannot agree with the opinion of various authors who exaggerate the significance of Ivan Tyapkin’s case for Russian history.
