Karimov O.V., Pumpyanskaya O.V. A brave war pilot E.S. Antonov – a native of Lebedyan

The article analyzes the fate of a military pilot born in Lebedyan, Lipetsk region, Lieutenant Colonel Antonov Evgeny Sergeevich (1910-1942). Having been educated at Yeisk and Lugansk military schools of pilots and observer pilots, Lieutenant Antonov was assigned to the 56th Fighter Aviation Brigade in Zhytomyr. In May 1937, Eugene was selected to be sent on a special mission to Spain to help the Republican army in the war against the Francoists. A business trip to Spain, awarding the Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner, friendship with Hero of the Soviet Union Anatoly Konstantinovich Serov served as a kind of “springboard” for the rapid career growth of Evgeny Sergeyevich Antonov. Unfortunately, the life of Lieutenant Colonel Antonov ended in a tragic aviation disaster, like the life of many famous pilots of the late 1930s and early 1940s (S.I. Gritsevets, V.P. Chkalov, A.K. Serov, P.D. Osipenko and others).

Key words: military school, Spanish Civil War, fighter aviation brigade, fighter aviation squadron, pilot, Red Army.
