The article discusses the factors that influence the formation of university students’ views on Russian statehood. The results of the author’s sociological study «Historical memory of youth: attitude to the study of history, understanding the problems of the historical past and present (on the example of student youth of the city of Ulyanovsk)» are presented. The method of mass questionnaire survey (n=400 students of Ulyanovsk universities) determined the level of interest in history and the importance in understanding questions about historical processes, events and the ability to understand them. It has been established that the higher the level of education of the respondents, the more responsibly they approach the issue of the importance of knowledge of history. The family (parents, relatives, friends) and the education system (school, universities) are singled out among the factors in the formation of student youth’s views on the Russian statehood. The key trials in the history of Russiathat are important for young people are identified: the Great Patriotic War, the October Revolution of 1917, the Patriotic War of 1812, the collapse of the USSR. The use of cluster analysis made it possible to identify four typical groups of students with specific behavioral characteristics in understanding Russian history and approaches to its study. The results obtained can be applied in the implementation of the teaching of the course “Fundamentals of Russian Statehood”, taking into account the peculiarities of students perception of the historical path of Russia and to strengthen the influence of factors influencing the formation of their views on Russian statehood.
