This article analyzes the content of the curriculum in mathematics of the basic school of the 1970s. The basic concepts in the course “mathematics”, “algebra” and “geometry” introduced by the set-theoretic approach are considered. The main innovations in each course of mathematics adopted by the reform of the basic general mathematical education of the 1970s are highlighted. The relevance of this article is determined by modern trends in the modernization of Russian education. School education in Russia is consistently developing, updating its standards and content. Thus, the adopted concept of the development of mathematical education in the Russian Federation in accordance with the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated 24.12.2013 N 2506-r (ed. from 08.10.2020) formulates as its main direction the improvement of the content of mathematical education in primary and secondary schools. In the 1970s, major changes in the content of school mathematics took place in Russia, modernizing the education system. The study of this historical phenomenon will highlight the main aspects that affect the success of the reform of mathematics in primary and secondary schools. The object of the study is general mathematical education in the USSR during the 1970s. The subject of the study is the process of reforming general mathematical education in the domestic pedagogy of this period. In accordance with this, the article uses a set of methodological approaches: historical-analytical; historical-contextual; problem-chronological; paradigmatic. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the comparative system-structural analysis of the content of the basic mathematical education of the period under consideration, as well as the allocation and generalization of the main results of this reform. The result of this study is the characteristic of changes in the content of school mathematics produced by the reform under consideration, as well as the identification of the main reasons that influenced its effectiveness.
