Abstract
The purpose of the article is to consider the issues of public sentiment of the population of the province of Central Russia and their reaction to the events of the Russian-Japanese war. The article analyzes the transformation of provincial residents’ views on the nature, events and results of the war, as well as the modification of their perception of external and internal enemies under the influence of military events. The relevance of the topic is related to the little-studied nature of the main aspects of the perception of the war by the provincial inhabitants, as well as the importance of these issues for understanding the origins of the events of 1914-1922. The research is based on materials from the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the State Archive of the Ryazan Region, print publications of the early twentieth century (Budil`nik, Tula Diocesan Vedomosty, Ryazan Diocesan Vedomosty, etc.), memoirs of participants and contemporaries of the events. Historical and logical methods were used as research methods, which made it possible to identify cause-and-effect relationships, examine development processes and analyze available sources and literature. Problematic and systematic methods made it possible to conduct a consistent analysis of public sentiment throughout the Russian-Japanese war, to identify trends in public sentiment and perception of the enemy. As a result of the study, conclusions were drawn about the formation of two directions in the socio-political life of the province, the first of which is associated with the perception of war as a kind of duty requiring the consolidation of society, heroism on the battlefields, and in the rear – the organization of assistance to the front. The second trend was expressed in the fact that society was not ready for the hardships that the war brought, which led to an increase in critical attitudes towards the war and the government.
