The article focuses on the relations between the Polabian Slavs (the Obodrites and the Wilzians) and the Frankish Empire in the VIII – IX centuries. Having reviewed the written sources, analyzed historiography of the late XX century and the modern archaeological materials, the author comes to the conclusion that the Polabian Slavs borrowed the material culture of the Frankish aristocrats and military and ceramic technology of the Frankish Empire in the early Carolingian Times.
