S.V. Perevezentsev THE ROLE OF THE RUSSIAN SOVEREIGN IN THE CREATION OF THE “HOLY RUS” On the basis of evidence from spiritual and political sources dated from middle – second half of the 16th century


The article is devoted to the most important period of formation of the Russian state – the middle – the second half of the 16th century, the time of the reign of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. One of the central places of the article is the analysis of the icon “The Church Militant”, which was of great importance for the national elite of that time. The author puts a special emphasis on the time and situation when the icon was created – 1552, the Kazan campaign of Ivan IV, as well as its link with the literary monument of that era – “Kazan History”. From that moment, the sovereign started to play his role as the creator of Holy Rus – new Jerusa-lem, which is reflected in other church-state and cultural events of the period under study.
