Kotyukova T.V. On the question of studying the history of Turkestan autonomy in the post-soviet space

Turkestan (Kokand) autonomy was the first, but not the only attempt to create certain political entities on the outskirts of the former Russian Empire, which, having the status of autonomy, still did not think themselves outside the framework of “big Russia,” however, provided that there were freedoms and some kind of federal structure. The history of autonomy was one of the least studied pages of the 1917 revolution in the USSR. Three decades after the dismantling of the USSR, the history of the creation and political existence of Turkestan autonomy continues to be a topic of little study and relevance, both in Russia and in most Central Asian states. In this article we will attempt to analyze in basic terms Russian-language historiography, its approaches and assessments of the history of the emergence and existence of the Turkestan (Kokand) autonomy, which take place in the post-Soviet space both in the modern states of Central Asia, primarily Uzbekistan, and in the Russian Federation.

Key words: Turkestan (Kokand) autonomy, revolution, historiography, Turkestan, Russia, Central Asia.
