Abstract

The article presents the results of a sociological study conducted among high school pupils in Lipetsk during 2023 – the first half of 2024 and devoted to the perception of the events of the Cold War by young people. The relevance of this topic is due to the return of images and rhetoric of the «cold war» to the public space, and the general escalation of military and political confrontation in the world. The constructivist approach was used as the methodological framework of the study. The results of the work revealed a close connection between the images of the «cold war» and the images of nuclear confrontation. The perception of the «cold war» is largely dictated by popular culture and current political discourse, however, it is important to note the isolation of the images presented from the historical and cultural context of the second half of the twentieth century, from the theme of war as such – respondents often seize just on bright images, as well as on the theme of the post-apocalypse. The emotional component of the memory of the «cold war» is saturated with feelings of fear and anxiety, and the respondents attribute the same emotions to their peers who lived during the «cold war» itself, which confirms the tendency noted by researchers to gradually move away from global historical narratives to the locuses of family memory.
