The article is devoted to some aspects of the legacy of E.D. Maximov – an economist, publicist and public figure of Russia in the second half of XIX – the beginning of XX century. Part of his work Maximov – a representative of the legal-populist direction – dedicated to the study of the history of the so-called “cultural populism.” Based on the analysis of the works by Maximov (Slobozhanin), his letters, it is concluded that “cultural populism” emerged in the 1860s, together with the revolutionary direction, and P.L. Lavrov can be considered to be its ideologue. At the beginning of the XX century Maksimov became the head of this direction, but today his name is undeservedly forgotten.
