The article considers the essence of «soviet antinormanism» by the the example of the works of one of the most active follower of I.P. Shaskolskiy. Presented as the highest achievement of Soviet science, allegedly undermined the foundations of the Norman theory and allowed to solve the Varangian question, «the Soviet antinormanism» in fact represent-ed this theory in a covered marksist phraseology, as required by the then political situation. As a result, it not only further strengthened the normanism, but led to the situation when the Varangian question itself was interpreted in a false light and discredited true antinorman-ism, contained in the writings of pre-revolutionary and Soviet historians S.A. Gedeonov, D.I. Ilovaisky, B.V. Vilinbakhov and A.G. Kuzmin.
