The author of the article makes an attempt to analyze the method of organization of educational institutions for the peasantry in the second half of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the situation in Yelets uyezd of Oryol province. The choice of chronological boundaries of the study (1850-1860-ies) can be explained by the fact that at that period educational reforms and the formation of educational institution network began in rural areas. The materials of the periodical press, in particular, Oryol diocesan sheets and archival documents were used as the main information source of the study.
