The object of the study is the teaching of ballroom dance in Russia in the 18th century. The subject of the study is the position of court dance master in Russia in the first half of the 18th century and the search for information of the dance masters who held it. The methods used in the work are: cultural-historical when studying the place of dance in the cultural space of the 18th century; the method of historical reconstruction when restoring the Russian culture of teaching dance on the basis of Russian memoirs and archival documents; biographical when restoring the biographies of teachers who held the position of court dance master. The study concluded that the position of court dance master was established by Peter the Great, but this staff position existed only until the mid-1730s, and was later abolished by Anna Ioannovna, since it turned out to be more rational to pay the dance master through the Italian company.
