Abstract
The article examines the criticism of the special status of the Baltic region in the journalistic legacy of Y.F. Samarin as an important aspect of the national policy of the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century. The relevance of the work is due to modern discussions about historical models of integrating national regions into a unified state space. The object of the study is the concept of national-state structure in the context of the problem of relations between the imperial center and the national outskirts. The subject of the study is Y.F. Samarin’s critical views on the political and legal status of the Baltic region, as expressed in his works «Letters from Riga», «History of Riga» and «Outskirts of Russia». The work uses historical-genetic, historical-comparative, and biographical research methods to reveal the evolution of the publicist’s views and place them in the socio-political context of the era. The scientific novelty lies in the comprehensive analysis of Y.F. Samarin’s arguments regarding the special status of the Baltic provinces and the reconstruction of his idea of integrating these territories into the imperial space. The research materials allow us to delve into the evolution of the Russian Empire’s policy towards its national outlying regions in the 19th century.
