The article deals with the issue of the national identity of Hungarians, their ideas about the place of Hungary in the European community in the first half of the 19thand the beginning of the 20th cen-tury, which is relevant from scientific and socio-political points of view.” The bearer of the” national idea ” –the Hungarian intelligentsia, and, in particular, bright representatives of the artistic and intel-lectual elite S. Petefi and E. Adi, defended the democratic model of magyarization of Slavs, Romani-ans and representatives of other Nations living in Hungary. Special attention is paid to the issue of genesis and formation of S. Petefi’s Hungarian identity.
