The article is devoted to the study of the problem of food security of the USSR in the last period of its existence. This problem is analyzed from the point of view of agricultural research and identification of the causes of its inhibition. The attention in the article focuses on such an agricultural area as the Central Chernozem region. The main attention is paid to the formation of the production sphere and, first of all, to the improvement of the material and technical base of collective farms and state farms. Along with the identification of miscalculations and mistakes in the agrarian policy of the authorities in the center and on the ground, the undoubted positive processes that eventually led to the strengthening of the machine and tractor base and the growth of agricultural production are shown.
