The appeal to the topic is justified by the increased interest in the history of liturgical singing in the Russian Orthodox Church in the Soviet years, the insufficient study of this issue in the historiography of the Kalinin region. Based on the reporting documentation of the authorized Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Kalinin region, the diocesan administration, and the memoirs of contemporaries, the state of church singing in the 1940s – 1950s in the Kalinin diocese is considered. For the first time, the materials of an interview with V.M. Fetisov are introduced into scientific circulation, which reflects the details of the organization of the work of the bishop’s choir. Using comparative analysis, the gender and age composition, professional level, repertoire of choirs of the cathedral “White Trinity” in Kalinin, the Ascension Church of the district center of Ostashkov, rural parishes are characterized. Special attention is paid to singing at prayer meetings of believers in the absence of active churches and clergy. The conclusion is made about the influence of the following factors on the state of church singing: the pre-revolutionary tradition, the location of parishes and the activity of rectors, the self-organization of believers. The results can be used for further study of the revival of the church life of the Kalinin diocese in the 1940s – 1950s.
Key words: church singing, regents, tradition, Kalinin diocese, diocese administrators, clergy, parish, believers.
