The relevance of the topic of this article is determined by the importance of social media in the modern life of society around the world. Forms of social interaction through the Internet are a completely new historical type of communication. Social media has a huge potential in the field of management. The managerial contribution of social media is considered all over the world as a fundamentally new and quite effective means for the concentration of power. Methodological and theoretical aspects of the development of the information society were analyzed in the works of M. Castells and D. Bell. The main trends in the analysis of social media within the framework of this issue are revealed in the work of D.D. Klyuchnikov. The object of the study is social media, and the subject of the study is social media in the context of the development of the information society. The purpose of the study is to study the specifics of using social media as a tool of political communication. The following approaches and methods served as the theoretical and methodological basis of the research: a) the neo-institutional approach focuses on the consideration of the mechanisms of functioning and implementation of social media; b) the socio-constructivist approach involves identifying the impact of social media on the principles of forming a picture of the world among users who absorb media content, thereby constructing their identity in the information society.
