This article attempts to analyze the trends in the theory and practice of career guidance in Russian pedagogy. Presents the results of theoretical research in the field of vocational guidance, It also describes three prevailing approaches, one of which follows the traditions of classical career guidance, the second is focused on early professionalization and a wide use of digital career guidance products, the third is aimed at supporting professional choice in in conditions of maximum uncertainty in the development of the economy and the labor market. Based on the analysis of established practices, three large groups of career guidance systems are described, based on the activities of the school psychological service, the content of educational programs and social partnership, respectively. The article discusses the possibility of continuing the scientific and pedagogical search in the interests of developing professional orientation in a modern school in the context of changing government policy aimed at support and regulation of vocational guidance. The paper reveals the existing contradictions and describes the ways to overcome them. Using the methods of analysis, synthesis and modeling, the approaches of the author’s model of career guidance in school are compared with the requirements of a Unified model of career guidance. Using the example of this comparison, contradictions are formulated and practical steps are proposed with which it is possible to balance the opposing aspirations of beneficiaries in the labor and education markets.
