The article is devoted to the analysis of the trade union as an institution of civil society. The author considers historical aspects of the formation of civil society and simultaneously with the development of civil society, analyzes the origin and subsequent process of development of trade unions, which has shaped the modern state of trade unions in America, Europe and Russia. The features that distinguish trade unions from other civil society institutions in post-industrial Russian society are identified. The analysis of subjective and objective factors hindering the effective development of trade unions in modern Russia is given.
