The article considers the tonal theory of painting of the famous Russian artist and teacher N.P. Krymov from the standpoint of its current methodological potential and practical application in the process of teaching students plein air painting. Many of the fundamental issues of the meaning of the general tone the transmission of the coloristic state holistic light and color relations in working on the landscape from nature are comprehended in a new way as the most important elements of mastering professional visual literacy in the system of modern art education. Particular attention in the study is paid to the authentic reconstruction of N.P. Krymov’s ideas of artistic pedagogy in relation to work on the landscape, based on a comparative study of the texts of his articles, speeches and memoirs of students. The paper also used methods of theoretical analysis of modern scientific and methodological literature on various issues of plein air painting and teaching it in the process of conducting art practices at the university. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the meaningful application of the main provisions of N.P. Krymov’s tonal theory of painting as well as his specific practical methods and recommendations for performing studies from nature will contribute to a more effective formation of special professional knowledge and skills for student artists to work in the open air.
