Over the past 30 years, Russian society has undergone significant changes in social, economic and cultural development, affecting all spheres of public life and marking the transition to the post-industrial era. These changes have also influenced the expectations of society regarding graduates of higher educational institutions. In this regard, it is not surprising that changes have occurred in the education system. Teachers and other specialists in the field of higher education are now actively looking for ways to revive the national university system. At the same time, one of the most promising problems of university education is the insufficient level of motivation of students. The purpose of the study is to identify strategies to improve the quality of education for specialists in the field of defectology in the conditions of modern Russian society. The object of the study is the Russian higher education system in the context of training specialists in defectology. The subject of the study is the conditions for the formation of motivation for educational activities among students of special (defectological) education. The methodological basis of the research is the works of domestic authors: I.A. Zimnaya, E.K. Komarova, O.I. Kolomok, N.I. Meshkov, V.A. Yakunin, etc. The scientific novelty of the study consists in presenting the results of an experimental study on the formation of motivation among students obtained on the basis of Lipetsk State Pedagogical P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky University. In addition, the article presents recommendations for improving educational work on the formation of students’ motivation for academic and professional activities.
