The Java language is one of the languages for industrial software development. The learning of the language is integrated into the educational processes of universities and institutions of additional education. The article describes the experience of conducting a course in programming in Java at the Ryazan State Radio Engineering University named after V.F. Utkin, where the existing approaches have been analysed and tested. The course has been conducted for more than 5 years in collaboration with an information technology company. As a result, some textbooks and a workbook, aimed at teaching students to write easily changeable programs in Java, have been created. The course consists of 8 lectures and 8 two-hour long lab works. The lectures imply discussing examples of programs, connected with the studies notions. Students read relevant material in the textbook, do lab works. Then comments are made, the labs are discussed and students’ knowledge is checked at the exam. The result of the research is this practice-oriented course, built on the principles of orderliness, and stimulation of students’ work during the term.
