On the differentiation of the concept of «storytelling» as a possible educational tool in Russia and China

Abstract

This article was written as part of the task of exploring new methods of teaching foreign languages. The paper presents a chronology of the emergence, evolution, and research of the concept of “storytelling” in Russian and Chinese academia across different historical periods. Special attention is given to the application of storytelling in education, marketing, and media. A comparative analysis of scholarly works by Russian and Chinese authors dedicated to studying this method is conducted. The analysis reveals a number of contradictions in how the essence of this concept is understood within the scientific communities of Russia and China and draws conclusions about how the storytelling method is applied across various fields in these two countries. The research results demonstrate how cultural characteristics influence the interpretation and use of this method. Key differences in the perception of storytelling were identified: in Russia, it is viewed as a tool for persuasion and influence, while in China, it is primarily seen as an artistic device. This study contributes to the understanding of cross-cultural communication and offers recommendations for effectively integrating storytelling into foreign language education. The findings may be valuable for educators, linguistsand media professionals seeking to apply storytelling techniques in culturally diverse contexts.
